  Poster country flags and privacy

  the new forum originally had a little country flag next to each post showing the country that the post was made from based on the geoip encoding (the country the ip address is from).

  before i switched over to the new site someone made an issue about it violating their privacy and i didn't want to complicate and confuse the switchover with policy debate at the same time as technical issues so removed the flags even though i disagreed.. someone has already requested it as a feature and i think it should be added back so i thought it's now time to open the discussion and get everyone's opinions.

  first, the reason i think it should be shown:.

  No one can say that the issues and possibilities relating to this topic have not been aired.  It seems to me that it has polarized a small number of posters to the point of intransigence.

   The way the topic has evolved demonstrates to me the weakness of committees in making decisions.  Simon made the site transformation within a few hours to the approval of the majority of users after a unilateral decision.  Had he included the country flags in this iteration of the site architecture there may have been some grumbles but they would have been lost in the overall praise deserved.

  It seems to me that this issue has assumed an importance way out of balance with the overall picture.  It is time for Simon to weigh up the arguments and make his decision.  I for one will back him either way, he is the site owner and the sole adjudicator.

  Has anyone ever gotten disfellowshipped for going to University?

  jehovah's witnesses claim no one is disfellowshipped for pursuing higher education.

  somehow it seems there must be some halfwit sorry excuse for an elder somewhere who personally felt threatened by over educated young whippersnappers and decided to mark every nerd he could point his sweaty little finger with.

  I know of elders that had to stand down because their kids went.  I also know others who allowed it without a ny sort of negative effect on them.  I know of one person that came into a cong whilst in the middle of his masters degree and was appointed immediately as an elder.  There is no uniformity except in writing and theory.  Congs apply the direction as they see fit.

  Personally it wouldn't worry me at all.  I can imagine it being an inhibiting factor in countries with very low populations of JWs. Any one that posts any thing at all from those countries is probably paranoid beyond reason anyway, they would be very careful about identifying information in any case.  I don't think that anyone would be naive enough to say anything that would identify them if they were a country with tiny numbers.  It is an imaginary problem in my view.

  @sliding please start using your brain. On one hand all of you are always claiming that 2/3 of the children won't make it to baptism and leave the religion. and in this post you pretend as if every child raised as a JW will be baptised?

  Hmmm! I don't think I have ever made that assertion.  Of course any figure below 100% baptism represents further failure by WT despite brainwashing and constant indoctrination to achieve its ends.  However every assembly I go to, at least 50% of those baptised are children of those already in.  Somewhere in between these numbers there is probably something representing the truth.

  
  

  I don't claim to know anything other than the obvious headline figures, thats why I think that further analysis by someone with expertise would be rewarding.

  I have often thought that the figures given annually are a rich source of statistical analysis.  I have just looked at the overall world birth rate which stands at about 19/1000.  This very simply seems to translate to approximately 150,000 expected baptisms per year, more than half of those baptised.  Taking into account a worldwide mortality rate of 8/1000 the stand still rate would be an increase of around 85,000.  

  I think that on that simple basis the overall increase with all that trolley work, Jw.org, JW broadcasting billions of hours spent door knocking is around 1%.  That truly is pathetic.

  If I had the patience and a little more skill extracting the juice, country by country from these statistics I think there would be a lot of fun to be had.  Don't think that the WT doesn't do this.  I would bet my house on them knowing every last statistical detail for every country.  

  I wonder if there could be a shared project to collate and digitise the data and see what is really going on?

  Wisdom in "the Word of God". Really? What Watchtower got wrong at this week's Congregation "Bible" Study.

  the congregation "bible" study (cbs) for the week of december 29, 2014 to january 4, 2015 was taken from draw close to jehovah, pages 179-182, paragraphs 1-8.. paragraph 3 seems to be using the ancient jew's fear of jehovah's thunderous voice to justify the wisdom of him using moses to record and transmit his laws to the people.

  but there is an implied false dichotomy here.

  since god is supposedly almighty he is most certainly capable of giving a personal revelation of his requirements to every human in a clear, concise and unambiguous manner that they can fully understand and remember - without having to use his thunderous voice.

  Kalk, you make a good point.  If you want to judge the accuracy of what has been handed down and preserved from the soup of illiteracy of those ancient times then consider this.  The printed words of the previous WT gurus are already consigned to the fog of history.  Within a decade or two, the most considered words of those viewed at the time with an almost sacred reverence have been kicked to the kerb. The WT is doing it's best to obliterate and edit this material to dust.  How in heaven's name can we put any confidence in any thing written?
